Replacement Window Installation Checklist
Window Installation Day: Homeowner Prep Checklist
This checklist is for homeowners who already have a window installation scheduled with Cupcake. Window replacement is a major construction project — openings will be exposed during the work, and there will be crew activity throughout the interior and exterior of your home. A little preparation makes the day go smoothly and protects your belongings. If you haven’t yet had your evaluation, the window appointment page covers what happens before installation day. For the full overview of replacement windows in the Greater Austin Metro, see the replacement windows overview.
Before Installation Day
🏠 Interior Prep
- Clear furniture — move pieces away from each window being replaced to give the crew unobstructed access
- Remove window treatments — take down curtains, blinds, and shades before installation day to avoid damage
- Cover nearby belongings — window installation produces vibration and dust, particularly during cut-back work where drywall is removed and patched
🌿 Exterior Prep
- Clear the perimeter — move patio furniture, plants, and objects that could interfere with ladder placement or exterior work
- Reserve parking — keep space near the home for the crew, who will be transporting windows, tools, and materials throughout the day
- Notify neighbors — if work will affect street parking or produce noticeable noise from adjacent properties
📋 Confirm Your Order
- Review your order details — confirm style, size, and finish are correct before install day
- Verify start time and duration — confirm the schedule with us in advance
- Have someone home — an adult needs to be available throughout the installation to provide access and answer crew questions
- Weather contingency — if severe weather is expected, confirm the backup plan before the scheduled date
🐾 Children and Pets
- Keep out of the work area — openings will be exposed during removal and installation, with tools, glass, and debris at each station
- Plan for noise-sensitive pets — make arrangements for animals likely to be disturbed by the crew moving through the home
What to Expect During the Day
Crew Arrival and Setup
The installation crew arrives at the scheduled time and begins staging materials and tools. Expect activity at the front of the home and around each window location as the day gets underway.
Removal — The Loudest Part
Noise is concentrated during tear-out. Old windows are removed opening by opening, and depending on installation method, some interior drywall work may occur during this phase. If you’d prefer to be out of the home during the louder portions, plan around the earlier part of the day.
Installation and Trim-Out
Once each new window is set, the work quiets significantly. The crew moves between interior and exterior throughout this phase — flashing, sealing, and finishing each opening before moving to the next. Expect reduced access to rooms where active work is in progress.
Final Walkthrough
We conduct a walkthrough with you before closing out — testing every window for smooth operation, reviewing seals and finished edges, and covering anything that needs your attention. Ask for a demonstration of operation and locking on any window type you’re less familiar with. Old windows and all packaging are removed as part of the project. If there’s anything specific about disposal you want to flag, mention it before the crew arrives.
After Installation
Follow any post-installation care instructions provided at closeout, including waiting periods before cleaning new glass. If a concern comes up after installation, contact us early — small issues are easier to address before they develop further. Every installation is covered by our 10-year workmanship warranty, which covers installation quality directly and is separate from the manufacturer’s product warranty.
