Pella has been manufacturing doors and windows in Pella, Iowa since 1925 — one of the most recognized names in the residential door and window market, and for good reason. We install three Pella door products: Impervia fiberglass sliding doors, which use a proprietary thermoset fiberglass construction that is the most durable patio door material we install; Reserve wood doors, Pella’s premium designer line for historical renovations and custom architectural applications; and Lifestyle wood doors, a high-performance wood option that balances energy efficiency, noise reduction, and cost for modern homes. Pella’s 250 series vinyl slider is also available on request. For the full door brand overview see the door brands overview, or for the full door overview see the door replacement overview.

Pella Impervia — Fiberglass Sliding Patio Doors

Impervia is our primary Pella product and our first recommendation for sliding patio door replacements where fiberglass is the right material. The thermoset fiberglass construction is what separates it from vinyl and aluminum sliders — and the difference matters specifically for a track-mounted door system in Central Texas conditions.

Thermoset Fiberglass

Pella’s proprietary fiberglass is a thermoset material — it undergoes a permanent chemical change during manufacturing that makes it rigid under any operating temperature. It won’t melt, soften, or take a permanent set under heat. Tested from -40°F to 180°F, it holds its dimensions through the full range of Central Texas thermal cycling. For a sliding door track system, dimensional stability means the track stays aligned, rollers stay fitted, and the meeting rail continues to seal correctly at year ten the same way it did at year one.

Five-Layer Construction

Impervia uses Pella’s proprietary five-layer fiberglass — the strongest material available for patio doors. It’s 8x stronger than vinyl and won’t rot, corrode, or warp under normal operating conditions. The material is naturally water resistant — moisture resistance is a property of the fiberglass itself, not solely a function of sealant. This matters on a patio door threshold that sees direct weather exposure in every rain event.

Powder-Coat Finish

Impervia’s durable powder-coat finish resists chalking, fading, and scratching even in dark colors — a meaningful point in Central Texas where dark-colored frames on west-facing exposures absorb significant heat and UV. The finish holds its appearance for years without the color degradation that affects vinyl under sustained UV, even at darker color selections that would accelerate fading on lesser products.

Why Impervia Over Vinyl for Patio Doors

The thermoset construction doesn’t expand and contract the way vinyl does under temperature cycling. On a slider track system, that stability means consistent roller clearance, consistent meeting rail alignment, and consistent air sealing over the life of the door. Vinyl sliders from quality manufacturers perform well — Impervia performs better, particularly on west- and south-facing exposures that see sustained direct sun and the highest surface temperatures. Pella Wood Entry Doors — Reserve and Lifestyle

Pella produces two wood entry door lines — Reserve and Lifestyle — that address different ends of the wood door market. Both are real wood doors with genuine wood character that no manufactured material fully replicates. The differences between them are in customization depth, design vocabulary, and price. Full context on when wood is the right answer for an entry or french door is on the wood door materials page.

Premium Wood

Pella Reserve

  • Pella’s top-of-line wood door — the designer, no-compromises option
  • Historical authenticity — appropriate for historic renovations and architecturally significant homes
  • Near-limitless customization — custom sizes, shapes, and historical detailing
  • Traditional and Contemporary design options — intricate historic profiles or sleek minimalist lines
  • Hidden roll screen — a standout feature on a wood door system
  • Premium specialized wood types and extensive exterior color choices
  • Aluminum cladding available — protects the exterior wood surface from direct weather exposure

Right for historic renovations, custom architectural designs, or when a premium no-compromises wood aesthetic is the goal.

Performance Wood

Pella Lifestyle

  • High-performance wood at a more accessible price point than Reserve
  • Strong energy efficiency ratings — well above standard wood door performance
  • Noise reduction — up to 52% more than single-pane configurations
  • Clean, transitional design profile — versatile aesthetic for modern homes
  • Standard versatile sizing — flexible for most replacement applications
  • Aluminum cladding available — meaningful maintenance reduction on Central Texas exposures

Right for standard or modern homes where wood is the goal, energy efficiency matters, and Reserve’s premium price point isn’t warranted.

A Note on Aluminum Cladding

Both Reserve and Lifestyle are available with aluminum cladding on the exterior — an aluminum skin over the wood that takes the direct weather exposure instead of the wood itself. In Central Texas conditions where UV and heat accelerate finish degradation on exposed wood, aluminum cladding meaningfully reduces the maintenance cycle. The interior still shows real wood. The exterior aluminum handles the weather. For entry door and french door applications on south- or west-facing exposures, aluminum cladding is worth discussing before ordering.

Pella 250 Series — Vinyl Sliding Patio Doors

Pella’s 250 series is a vinyl sliding patio door — a solid, well-built vinyl product at a price point below Impervia. Anlin is our preferred vinyl slider recommendation, but if a homeowner specifically wants a Pella vinyl slider we install the 250 series. The performance characteristics follow the same vinyl vs. fiberglass logic covered on the sliding patio doors page — quality manufactured vinyl with good energy performance and warranty coverage, a step down from Impervia’s thermoset fiberglass in dimensional stability and finish longevity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Pella Impervia different from other fiberglass patio doors?

The thermoset fiberglass construction is the primary differentiator. Pella’s proprietary five-layer fiberglass doesn’t soften, warp, or take a permanent set under heat — it’s tested from -40°F to 180°F and holds its dimensions through that full range. For a sliding door track system, that stability means consistent roller clearance and meeting rail alignment over time in ways that vinyl — which expands and contracts significantly with temperature — doesn’t maintain as reliably. It’s also 8x stronger than vinyl, naturally water resistant, and finished with a powder coat that resists chalking and fading even in dark colors under sustained UV.

What is the difference between Pella Reserve and Lifestyle wood doors?

Reserve is Pella’s premium designer wood line — the right choice for historical renovations, custom architectural applications, and homeowners who want near-limitless customization, specialized wood types, and no-compromises detailing. The hidden roll screen is a standout feature. Lifestyle is the performance wood line — strong energy efficiency, noise reduction, clean transitional aesthetics, and a more accessible price point. For most homes where wood is the goal but Reserve’s premium isn’t warranted, Lifestyle delivers a high-quality wood door at a more reasonable cost. Reserve is roughly twice the price of Lifestyle on comparable configurations.

Does aluminum cladding eliminate the maintenance requirements on a wood door?

It reduces them significantly — particularly on exposed entries. The aluminum exterior takes the direct weather exposure, UV, and physical contact that would otherwise hit the wood surface, which is what drives the refinishing cycle. The interior wood still needs care and the threshold and any exposed wood details still require attention, but the primary maintenance driver — exterior finish degradation from weather and UV — is substantially reduced. On south- and west-facing entries in Central Texas, aluminum cladding on a Pella wood door is a meaningful upgrade over an uncladded wood door in terms of realistic maintenance requirements.

When would you recommend Pella over ProVia for an entry door?

When the homeowner specifically wants a real wood door — Reserve or Lifestyle. ProVia’s entry door line is fiberglass and steel — they don’t make a wood entry door. For wood entry door applications, Pella is our product. For fiberglass and steel entry doors, ProVia is our primary recommendation. The brands serve different parts of the entry door market rather than competing directly on the same product.

Is Pella Impervia available for french door applications?

Impervia is primarily a sliding patio door product — it’s Pella’s fiberglass slider line. For fiberglass french doors we install ProVia Signet and Ascent. If a homeowner specifically wants a Pella french door, the Reserve and Lifestyle wood lines are available in french door configurations — that’s actually one of the applications where Pella’s wood door products, particularly with aluminum cladding, are worth serious consideration.
