Cupcake Home Improvements were a delight to have work in my home. They communicated every step of the process, kept in contact, to keep me informed of the schedule and once the project started they were on time, and respectful of the neighbors. They worked hard and did the job without issue. They cleaned up my property as well as the neighbors and made it look like they were never there. The materials they used were top quality, and their crew was very respectful of our home and took precautions with my personal items in the porch and took care of my plants.
This Hillcrest home in South Austin had taken three hail storms in roughly three years and was finally showing the consequences. The roof — old enough that the original underlayment was disintegrating and the galvanized pipe boots had reached the end of their useful life — developed an active leak after the most recent storm. Water tracked down through the second floor and surfaced on the kitchen ceiling below. The homeowner, a former custom homebuilder on a fixed income, knew exactly what was happening. He also knew he couldn’t put it off — though a recent foundation leveling had drained the available cash.
The path to this project ran through previously denied insurance claims. Despite the documented hail history, coverage had been repeatedly refused. Prior contractor bids had come back at $25,000–$30,000 — numbers shaped by post-storm demand driving regional pricing up across Travis County. The homeowner had been searching for a contractor who would actually come out at a fair price, with no luck — until a Cupcake canvasser knocked on the door. The estimate that followed three days later came in meaningfully lower than the earlier bids.
The homeowner chose GAF HDZ asphalt shingles in charcoal with Class 3 impact rating, with the full GAF system underneath: Storm Guard ice-and-water shield in the valleys with a second layer of rolled metal flashing, Felt Buster synthetic underlayment over the entire deck, and Pro-Start starter strip around the perimeter. The Class 3 rating directly addressed the hail history — Class 3 shingles meet a higher impact resistance standard than standard architectural shingles, meaningful in Travis County where hail is the primary roof failure driver. Asphalt shingles remain the best balance of weather resistance and value for Central Texas residential roofs at this price point.
Install was a single day. The crew arrived on time, worked through without breaks or distraction, and replaced the old galvanized pipe boots — the most common leak point on aging roofs — with Bullet pipe boots, silicone units warrantied for 35 years and one of the few components that actually outlasts the shingles around them. Each shingle was nailed with six fasteners instead of the spec four, a 50% upgrade in attachment that matters in a region with 130 mph wind events. Owners and supervisors stopped by throughout the day.
