Roofing Installation Day: Homeowner Prep Checklist

This checklist is for homeowners who already have a roofing project scheduled with Cupcake. Roofing is loud and physical, and there will be crew activity all around your home throughout the day. A little preparation makes the day smoother and helps protect your property. If you haven’t yet had your evaluation, the roofing appointment page covers what happens before installation day. For the full overview of roofing in the Greater Austin Metro, see the roofing overview.

Before Installation Day

🌿 Yard and Exterior

  • Mow short — short grass makes nail sweeps and cleanup significantly more effective
  • Pick up yard debris — remove pet waste, sticks, toys, and balls from the work zones
  • Move outdoor items — relocate patio furniture, grills, smokers, potted plants, and décor near the house
  • Protect landscaping — if you have delicate plants near the drip line, cover or protect them in advance

Nails and debris are easier to find and remove on a clean, mowed lawn.

🚗 Vehicles and Access

  • Clear the driveway — move all vehicles away from the house before the crew arrives
  • Keep the street available — leave room for material delivery and dumpster placement
  • Unlock gates — provide access codes or unlock any gates to side yards and the backyard
  • Flag the electrical panel — let us know its location if it may be relevant to the scope

Roofing crews need room for delivery, staging, and cleanup. Tear-off can send debris outward from the roof edge.

💧 Utilities and Outdoor Fixtures

  • Mark sprinkler heads — flag any heads near the house with visible markers
  • Flag hidden utilities — identify irrigation lines, low-voltage lighting wiring, or septic cleanouts near work zones
  • Pool or hot tub — let us know in advance if either is near the roof edge so we can plan protection accordingly

Ladders, foot traffic, and cleanup are safer when sprinkler heads and utilities are clearly identified.

🏠 Inside the House

  • Secure wall décor — remove or stabilize pictures, mirrors, and fragile items on exterior walls
  • Cover attic storage — protect items stored near the roof deck from dust and vibration
  • Close windows and doors — reduces dust intrusion during tear-off and installation

Vibration, footsteps, and some dust are normal. Interior damage is not — report it immediately if you notice anything.

🐾 Pets and Children

  • Secure noise-sensitive pets — make arrangements before the crew arrives, not after
  • Prevent bolting — secure any pets that might run when doors or gates open throughout the day
  • Keep children away — tools, nails, and debris are present throughout all work areas

Roofing is often the hardest part of the day for pets. Planning ahead makes a real difference.

What to Expect During the Day

1

Tear-Off — The Loudest Part

Expect hammering, compressors, and material movement from the start. Tear-off and deck prep happen earlier in the day and are the loudest phase. Crews will be on the roof and moving around the full perimeter of the home. If you’d prefer to be out during the loudest portion, plan around the morning.

NormalVibration, footsteps, and consistent noise during tear-off
Not normalInterior damage — report it immediately if you notice anything

2

Installation and Trim-Out

Once tear-off is complete, the crew moves into underlayment, shingle installation, flashing, and ridge work. Activity continues around the full perimeter. The work quiets somewhat during this phase compared to tear-off but remains active throughout the day.

3

Weather and Timing

Roofing is weather-dependent. If conditions change, work may pause and protection measures are applied as needed. Schedule adjustments may occur.

NormalShort pauses due to weather with protective measures applied
Not normalLong delays without communication from us

4

Cleanup and Nail Sweep

Our crew handles debris removal, site cleanup, and magnetic nail sweeps around all work zones, followed by a final perimeter walk. You should still do your own visual walk-around — especially if you have kids or pets. If you find anything concerning, report it right away.

5

Final Walkthrough

We walk the completed roof with you before closing out — reviewing vents, flashing, ridge caps, and edges. Ask questions if anything looks unclear. This is the best time to raise concerns while the project is still fresh and the crew is on site.

After Installation

Check after the first rain for any unexpected issues. Watch for anything that looks loose or out of place. If something doesn’t feel right, say something early — small issues are easier to address quickly than problems that have had time to develop. Every installation is covered by our 10-year workmanship warranty, which covers installation quality directly and is separate from the manufacturer’s product warranty.
